Hype or Drag: Verdict at the end
Can i tell you a secret..... I have a weak Spot for Fornier. I really love bright colors and they seem to publish decks with artists who aren't afraid of splashing color about.
Also, I appreciate that their decks are mostly lower end of the price range and affordable to everyone. Sometimes I feel like talented readers are priced out of tarot decks as some decks seem to cost the earth for no special reason.
(Of course I expect it from Indie Decks which are developed on a much smaller scale)
Ricardo Cavolo
Behind this deck is Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo, who's art can only be described as a mixture of Folk Art, religious, Tattoo culture, tribal and nautical themes. (As described on his bio)
We can clearly see the influence of his culture, it feels like a total celebration.
Box and card stock
Box is just Standard, card stock is normal. Nice and bendy and easy to shuffle. The cards are slightly longer which is my preferred card shape, actually these are just comfy to use.
The Deck itself follows the Marseilles/ Smith-Waite principles so it's very familiar and it means and Tarot reader can pretty much pick it up and run with it. None of the names are changed, or meanings. So the guide book is small.
Imagery
Tarot Del Fuego is nuts.
Fuego means fire and that's exactly how this deck feels. The cards are busy and follow the Smith-Waite rules but with eyes.....
A lot of eyes....
The art style kind of reminds me of the cartoon Real Monsters
I can't unsee it.
There is also a heavy use of Flora and Fauna, which I love and promotes a heavy connection to Nature.
I find that the cards are a bit busy, I love the style because it's just one i like but if I'm brutally honest would be really selective about who I use it with. I feel more reserved people may not appreciate how amazing they are and be put off by the reading. This review is about being honest guys, even if I like a deck I think of how it will be recieved. However, i know a mexican lady who would NOT be put off by the artwork and may stop listening to the reading just to look at it.
The World, this is also a character you see a few times through the deck. Which is actually quite clever as it helps to imagine yourself as the Archetypes. So the repetition helps.
In terms of human form I REALLY rate the deck, it's actually quite daring.
No Fear of Nakedness but done without sexualisation.
I wonder what kind of art he would come up with if he did sexualise it.
Side note: I don't have a problem with Sexy Decks, I just don't have any...yet!
As I go through this deck i just feel like it oozes body positivity more than anything. It makes me feel very free and the body images are done in a very beautiful way.
And not all the cards are naked!
Still what surprised me amongst the vibrancy and madness of the deck, was the gentle sensitivity and softness also shown.
I just love this card
I think this is such a beautiful card.
Ricardo Covolo is not afraid to show us vulnerability coupled with strength amongst the firey theme of the deck, this is summed up in the next card and I think it could be one out my fave depictions of Strength.
The artwork does lack some of the standard symbolism (Besides the expected stuff from the suites, for example) but it makes up for it by using the imagery so well to convey the meaning anyway.
Before I conclude, let's take a look at 10 of swords, as I've said before I do judge decks by this card
Conclusion
Tarot Del Fuego is an unashamedly Spanish explosion into the world of Tarot. It respectfully uses the rules but I would not recommend for a beginner unless they themselves can cope with bright colorful artwork.
I myself will continue to use it, I feel its depictions feed the emotions that the deck should envoke when using or reading for myself and others. It's been a joy to review because I can look at this for a long time without getting bored. And I've actually omitted so many cards from this. So I'll leave you with one of my favourites....
Drag or Hype? HYPE all the way
